Box-n-Go Storage for Students — Storage Built Around the Student Needs
Storage for students isn’t optional. Dorm housing contracts and apartment leases end on fixed dates — usually right after finals — and belongings have to go somewhere. The traditional answer is a self-storage facility, which assumes the student has a car or truck, time to load and drive, and someone to help. Most students have none of those during finals week. Parents end up flying in. Friends with cars get pressed into service. Belongings end up at a facility the student can’t easily get back to. Box-n-Go was built for the student situation: we come to the dorm or apartment, pick belongings up, store them indoors at our centrally located warehouse, and bring them back when the student returns. The advantages below cover what that means in practice for the student and for the parents.

Advantage 1 — We come to you
Transportation is the single biggest practical problem with student storage. Most students don’t have a vehicle that fits a mattress, mini-fridge, desk, and a stack of boxes — let alone the truck they would need to haul it to a self-storage facility. The students who do have cars usually have small ones, which means multiple trips, multiple gas stops, and multiple hours during the week when they have the least time to spare.
Box-n-Go solves this before it becomes a problem. We deliver to the dorm, the apartment, or wherever the student is. Either we bring a Flex container that sits at the residence while the student loads it, or we come inside, label everything, and carry it out ourselves. The student never has to figure out how to transport anything. No car. No truck rental. No multiple trips. No driving an unfamiliar vehicle through finals week with belongings piled in the back seat.
Advantage 2 — Service designed for students
Traditional self-storage was designed for adults with cars, trucks, and the time to coordinate the move themselves. Students have none of those — at least not during the move-out window that lands on top of finals. Every part of self-storage assumes you can drive yourself to the facility, lift things up the ramp, navigate the corridors, and come back when you need access.
Box-n-Go’s student services are built around the actual constraints students face. The two service tiers (Self-Load and A La Carte Valet) match the two student housing situations: apartments with furniture, and dorm rooms with mostly boxes and small items. Pickup, storage, and redelivery scheduling work around academic calendars rather than against them. Equipment is matched to student needs, not to adult homeowners. Every operational choice was made with students in mind.
Advantage 3 — No parent travel required
Parents who don’t live near the school often end up flying in to help with move-out. Flights, hotels, car rental, and time off work add up to several hundred dollars before any actual storage cost. Even local parents may not have the time during end-of-semester crunch — finals fall on the same week as work deadlines, family commitments, and everything else parents are trying to handle.
Box-n-Go takes the parent travel out of the equation. With A La Carte Valet, our team comes to the dorm, labels and lifts everything, and handles the move-out without the parent flying in. With Self-Load Flex, the container sits at the residence and the student loads it over a few days — friends or roommates can help, no parent travel needed. Parents can stay home, keep working, and trust that move-out is being handled.
Box-n-Go Storage & Moving - as Easy as 1-2-3
Store on your driveway or inside our secure facility. Load/unload only once. Ground level access.
Advantage 4 — Box-n-Go U Box, designed for student packing
Most cardboard moving boxes are built for one careful move — pack at the old place, unpack at the new place, recycle the box. Students aren’t doing that move. Students are packing with an hour between exams, getting boxes carried by friends, stacking them in storage for months, and then doing the whole thing in reverse. The standard box from the hardware store wasn’t built for this load.
The Box-n-Go U box was. Thicker cardboard. Full overlap flaps that close completely instead of leaving a center seam. The result is a box that holds its shape under stacking, survives being carried by people who haven’t packed a box before, and protects what’s inside even when the box is overpacked or the items inside aren’t perfectly arranged. We send a starter kit of five U boxes, packing tape, and a marker to A La Carte Valet customers. Students who prefer to use their own boxes are welcome to.
Advantage 5 — Lower total cost
The monthly self-storage rate is only one line in the cost of using a self-storage facility for student summer storage. Add the truck rental for move-in and move-out. Add the parent’s flight, hotel, and rental car. Add the storage unit insurance some facilities require. Add the time the student spends driving, loading, and dealing with a facility that wasn’t designed for students. The total often comes to several times the storage rate alone.
Box-n-Go consolidates the parts that actually cost money. No truck rental. No parent flight. No facility logistics. The customer pays for the storage and for the pickup-storage-redelivery service, and that’s it. For a typical summer storage period, the total often comes in below the monthly rate plus all the hidden costs of a facility-based approach. Cost-conscious students and parents end up choosing Box-n-Go for this reason as often as for any other.
Advantage 6 — Hassle-free storage
Self-storage at a facility assumes the student has the time, equipment, and judgment to manage the move themselves. Students figuring out which box truck to rent, which insurance the facility requires, what items can or can’t be stored, and how to navigate the facility’s hours and access policies are working from inexperience. Mistakes happen. Belongings get damaged in transit. Boxes leak because liquids weren’t properly sealed. Mini-fridges grow mold because they weren’t defrosted before storage.
Box-n-Go removes the parts of storage students don’t have time to learn. Our team handles labeling on A La Carte pickups so nothing gets misplaced. We answer the questions about what to pack and what not to pack before storage starts, not after something has gone wrong. We schedule pickup and delivery around the student’s calendar, not the facility’s. The parts of storage that go badly when handled by a tired, inexperienced person on a deadline are the parts we take off the student’s plate.

Box-n-Go Portable Storage Unit Sizes
Advantage 7 — Share a unit with a friend
The Flex container is sized for one student’s belongings — but it’s also sized to share. Two roommates moving out of the same dorm or apartment can split a Flex and split the cost. Two students from neighboring dorms can do the same. The container gets delivered once, sits in one location, gets loaded by both students over the few days it’s parked, and gets picked up once. The economics are roughly half the per-student cost of two separate storage arrangements.
Self-storage facilities don’t allow this. Each unit has one customer name on the contract. Splitting a unit between two students means one signs the contract and the other relies on access being given to them — which gets complicated when the contract holder has different schedules or moves home for the summer. Box-n-Go has none of those constraints. Two students share the container, each pays half, and both have access through the same booking.
Advantage 8 — Pickup and delivery on your schedule
The traditional self-storage move requires the student to be in three places at once: at home packing, at the rental truck location getting the truck, and at the storage facility unloading. Move-out day at the dorm has a hard deadline — most students have to be out by noon or 2 PM the day after their last final. The window for fitting in the truck rental, the loading, the drive, the facility check-in, and the unload is a few hours at most.
Box-n-Go runs on a different clock. With A La Carte Valet, we schedule pickup for the day that works for the student — usually the day after the last final or whenever the dorm move-out deadline lands. With Self-Load Flex, the container is at the residence for several days; the student loads when they have time. On the return side, redelivery is scheduled for the date the student wants belongings back, whether that’s August 15th or September 5th. The schedule fits the student’s calendar instead of forcing the student’s calendar to fit the facility.

Advantage 9 — Parent peace of mind
Parents who can’t be physically present during move-out worry about the same things students don’t think to worry about. Whether belongings will be damaged. Whether the storage facility is secure. Whether the items will make it back next semester. Whether the student is going to call asking for help solving some logistical problem in the middle of finals week.
Box-n-Go is set up so the parent can step away from move-out logistics and trust the process. Pickup and delivery are scheduled and confirmed by text. Items go directly from the student’s residence to indoor warehouse storage with no intermediate handling. The same company handles the pickup, the storage, and the return — one phone number for any question that comes up. Parents don’t need to fly in. They don’t need to coordinate with a separate truck rental, a separate storage facility, and a separate move-back. The whole event is one transaction.
Advantage 10 — Pay only for what you use
Self-storage rents fixed unit sizes. The smallest typical unit is 5 by 5 feet, which is far more space than a dorm room of belongings actually fills. The student pays for the full unit even though half of it is empty. The pricing model assumes the customer is filling the space they rented; for students with a few boxes and a mini-fridge, that’s almost never the case.
Box-n-Go’s A La Carte Valet bills by the box rather than by the unit. Storage cost scales with the actual number of items stored — a student with five boxes pays for five boxes, not for a 5×5 unit half-filled. Box-n-Go U boxes are billed at one rate; small items at another; bulky or fragile items requiring extra care at a third; and the Self-Load Flex container at a fourth. The student picks the service tier that matches what they’re actually storing, and the cost scales with that.
Advantage 11 — Indoor warehouse storage at no extra cost
Many self-storage facilities offer climate-controlled units as a separate, more expensive tier — outdoor or non-climate units at one rate, climate-controlled at a premium. Students storing belongings through a hot Southern California summer often need the climate-controlled tier to avoid coming back to musty clothes and warped books, which means paying the upcharge for the entire storage period.
Box-n-Go stores all containers indoors at our centrally located warehouse — a commercial-grade building with thick concrete walls and an insulated roof. There is no separate tier for climate-friendly storage. Wood Flex units are breathable. The warehouse interior stays steady through summer heatwaves. Belongings come back the way they went in. The protection is included in the standard storage service, not held back behind an upcharge.

Frequently asked questions
Do parents need to fly in to help with student storage?
In most cases, no. With A La Carte Valet, our team comes to the dorm or apartment on the scheduled pickup day, labels and lifts every item the student has packed, and carries it out — the student doesn’t need to be lifting anything heavy and parents don’t need to be there. With Self-Load Flex, the student loads the container with friends or roommates over the few days it’s parked at the residence; parents can stay home. Either service is built so parents can avoid the flight, the hotel, and the time off work that traditional storage usually requires.
What’s the difference between Self-Load Flex and A La Carte Valet?
Self-Load Flex is a portable storage container delivered to the student’s apartment or dorm building. The student loads it themselves over a few days. Box-n-Go picks it up, stores it indoors at our warehouse, and redelivers it when the student returns. This service works best for apartment students with furniture, or for two roommates sharing a container to split costs. A La Carte Valet is full-service: Box-n-Go’s team arrives at the student’s room, labels everything, picks up all the items, and stores them indoors. Pricing is by-the-box rather than by the unit. This works best for dorm students with mostly boxes and small belongings, and for students who don’t want to do the lifting themselves.
Can Box-n-Go store furniture?
Yes, both services accommodate furniture. Self-Load Flex is the typical choice for apartment students with couches, bed frames, desks, or larger items — the container is sized to fit a one-bedroom or studio’s contents. A La Carte Valet handles furniture too, billed as Extra Care items rather than by the box. Bicycles, mini-fridges, larger lamps, and similar items also fall into Extra Care pricing. There’s no item limitation — anything the student needs to store can be stored.
How long can student storage last?
Storage can run from a few weeks to multiple semesters or longer, depending on what the student needs. The most common arrangement is summer storage — a few months between the spring move-out and the fall move-in. Study abroad storage runs a full semester or year. Lease-gap storage covers the weeks between two leases. Pay-as-you-go monthly billing accommodates whatever length the student picks, and pre-paid summer bundles offer discounted rates for known storage periods.
What can and cannot be stored?
The “can be stored” list covers essentially anything in a typical dorm or student apartment — boxes, furniture, electronics, books, clothing, bedding, kitchen items, mini-fridges (cleaned and defrosted), bicycles, sports equipment, and seasonal items. The “cannot be stored” list is short and standard for any storage service: no perishable food, no liquids in open or unsealed containers (shampoo, drinks, cleaning products), no flammables, no hazardous materials, no live plants, no anything that would spoil or leak. The student manual on our site has the complete list.
Can roommates share a Flex container?
Yes. The Self-Load Flex container is sized to hold two students’ worth of dorm belongings or one student’s apartment contents. Two roommates moving out of the same dorm or apartment routinely split a Flex and split the cost. The container is delivered once, sits in one location, and gets picked up once. Each student has equal access during the loading window. Box-n-Go bills the customer who books the service; roommates handle the cost split between them.
