How Much Storage Space Do You Need?

How much storage space will you need? It is a genuinely hard thing to pin down exactly. You would have to know the volume of your belongings, which most people can’t picture; decide what is actually going into storage and what is staying, which tends to stay fluid right up to packing day; and predict how it all fits once it is loaded, when everyone packs differently and the advice online rarely matches your home. Getting it down to the square foot would take a PhD and then some. So this page doesn’t ask you to. It gives you three simple ways to estimate the storage space you need — pick the one that fits what you already know, and it tells you which Box-n-Go size, and how many.

Pick the way you want to estimate the storage space you need

People come to this knowing different things: some have rented self-storage and think in unit sizes, some only know their home, and some want it down to the item. Start with whichever fits you — each one is explained in full just below, and they all land on the same answer.

Compare to Self-Storage Sizes

If you have rented self-storage before, you probably think in unit sizes — a 5×10, a 10×10, a 10×20. Tell us the size you have in mind and we will show the Box-n-Go container or combination that can hold the same load. It is the quickest way to your size when you already have one in your head.

There is one thing worth knowing as you compare: a self-storage unit and a Box-n-Go container of the “same” size do not hold the same load. A self-storage unit makes you rent a walk-in aisle and door clearance you can’t pack into — space you pay for and can’t use. A Box-n-Go container packs solid, wall to wall. So the belongings that need a given self-storage unit often fit a smaller Box-n-Go container.

Why customers switch from self-storage

You already know how self-storage works — here is what changes when you switch to us.

  • Usable space, not rented aisle. You pack a container solid, wall to wall — no walk-in aisle or door clearance to rent and leave empty.
  • Handle your things once. With traditional storage you handle your belongings again and again — load a truck, drive, unload into a unit, and reverse it all later. With us you load at home and unload when you are done.
  • More secure than a self-storage facility. At a self-storage facility, anyone past the gate can roam the aisles. No one enters our warehouse — your container is stored indoors behind cameras and alarms, and you put your own padlock on it and keep the key. We don’t keep one. We have operated this way since 2006 with no break-ins.
  • Climate-friendly, no upcharge. Our containers are breathable and stored inside a warehouse with steady temperature year-round — no musty smell, and no climate-control premium.
  • Your rate holds. Many self-storage facilities raise the rate a few months in. We guarantee your month-to-month rate for a full year — or take a term-commitment discount if you know how long you will need it.

Estimate that is based on the size and type of your home

No unit size in mind? Start here. Tell us a few things you already know about your own place — how many bedrooms, whether it is an apartment or a house, and how full it is — and we will estimate the storage space you may need. It works from your furnished living space — the bedrooms and living areas that hold storable furniture — so the estimate reflects what fills a container, not raw floor space. You don’t have to know which size to pick; that is exactly what the tool tells you. The size is the answer you came for, not something you choose.

Please note: this estimate covers your furnished living space — bedrooms and living areas. It doesn’t count garages, attics, or basements, so if you are storing things from those too, you will need a little more room. Want it sized exactly? Build an inventory below.

Why Box-n-Go is the easier way

Still weighing your options? Here is what makes us the simple choice.

  • We come to you — no truck, no ramp. The container is delivered to your driveway at ground level. Nothing to rent, nothing to drive, nothing to climb.
  • Keep it at home, or store it with us. Leave the container on your property for as long as you need, or we store it indoors at our warehouse and bring it back when you want it. Your call, and you can change your mind.
  • Order an extra, just in case — pay only for what you use. Our Flex container is the modular alternative to the larger sizes: we deliver up to four in one delivery, for one flat rate. Unsure? Order one more than you think you need, load what you use, and send the rest back unused — we don’t charge you for those. You pay per container you use, not by how full it is.
  • Load on your own schedule. The container stays at your place as long as you reasonably need — pack a few rooms over a weekend, take a break, finish during the week. There is no clock.
  • Moving, not just storing? The same container can carry your things through a move when you are ready — no reloading, no second vendor.

What you can count on

You are already doing the careful version — here is what comes with it.

  • Free basic protection on every order. Coverage is included at no charge, with higher limits available if you want them.
  • Let us do the loading. Rather not lift the heavy furniture yourself? Professional loading is available — our crew can load your container for you.
  • Serving Southern California since 2006. Two decades of local storage and moves — we have handled just about every situation.
  • One company, start to finish. We deliver your container, store it, and bring it back on your timeline — you deal with us, not a chain of vendors.
  • Real local people. Locally owned, BBB accredited, and well reviewed. When you call, a local person picks up — not a call center.

Our Five Sizes at a Glance

Five sizes cover everything from a single room to a whole house. Here is the short version of what each one holds, so you can sanity-check your estimate. (Full dimensions and weight limits live on the Containers page.)

Size Living space it fits (≈ sq ft) Holds about
Flex (8′ × 5′) 320 1 to 1.5 rooms of furniture and belongings
Small (8′ × 8′) 550 a studio to a small one-bedroom
Medium (12′ × 8′) 825 a one- to two-bedroom apartment
Large (16′ × 8′) 1,100 a two- to three-bedroom apartment or small home
Extra-Large (20′ × 8′) 1,400 a three-bedroom home or larger

How they’re delivered — and what to do if you’re not sure

Now that you have seen the five sizes, here is how they actually reach you — because that is where one of them really earns its keep.

Four of them — Small, Medium, Large, and Extra-Large — work just the way you would expect. You pick the size when you order, and one container shows up at your place. That is perfect when you already know which size you want. The catch is the “when you already know” part: choose one and come up short, and you are arranging a second delivery; choose one that turns out too big, and you are paying for room you never use.

Most people aren’t sure, though — sizing is genuinely hard — so there is a container built for exactly that. Instead of committing to a single container, you can have up to four of these brought in one delivery, for one flat delivery fee. You set up only the ones you need and leave the rest standing. When we come to collect, we take all of them back, and you are charged only for the containers you actually used. The ones you never touched cost you nothing.

What Our Customers Think
Judy S.
Kelly N.
Janice H.

That quietly changes everything. You no longer have to guess your size and hope you got it right: order one or two more than you think you will need, and if you don’t use them, they simply go back at no charge. There is no penalty for being unsure. This container is our Flex — and the name is the whole idea, because you flex the number you bring to match what you really turn out to have, instead of locking yourself into one size in advance. It is the easy answer any time you can’t tell how much you have, or you are caught between two sizes: bring a little extra, pay for what you use.

One more thing worth knowing, whichever way you go: a Box-n-Go container packs solid, wall to wall, with no walk-in aisle you have to rent and leave empty. So it holds what a similar or even larger self-storage unit would — which means that when you translate from a self-storage size, you often need less space with us than you would expect.

How the Estimate Works

However you sized it — against a self-storage unit, from your home, or with a full inventory — you come away with a recommended size to start from. It helps to know what that number is, and what it isn’t.
It is an estimate: a careful best guess, not a promise. How much actually fits comes down to things no tool can see ahead of time — how you pack, what you decide to take versus leave behind, how neatly it all stacks once it is loaded, the one awkward piece that eats a corner. So the real answer can land a little over or a little under what the tool says. That is normal; it is true of every storage estimate, ours included.

Which is exactly why being a little unsure doesn’t cost you anything here. If you are not fully confident in the number, you don’t have to bet on it — that is what the Flex containers above are for: bring an extra as a cushion, and pay only for the ones you use. The estimate gets you close, and the cushion covers whatever it couldn’t.

Box-n-Go Storage & Moving – as Easy as 1-2-3
1We deliver the storage container to youWe Deliver
2We pick up your loaded containerWe Pick Up
3We store or move your containerWe Store/Move

Store on your driveway or inside our secure facility. Load/unload only once. Ground level access.

On-Site or at Our Warehouse

Once you know your size, there is one more choice — and it is an easy one.
Keep it on your property. The container sits on your driveway or in your yard, at ground level, for as long as you reasonably need. You load and reach your belongings whenever you want. All five sizes are available this way.

Store it indoors at our warehouse. We pick the loaded container up and store it inside our warehouse — a commercial building with thick walls and steady temperature, not an outdoor lot. When you need something, schedule a visit and we bring your container to ground level for free drive-up access — no corridors, no elevators, no fee. Flex, Small, Medium, and Large can be stored at the warehouse; the Extra-Large stays on-site only.

This only affects your size in one spot: if you want warehouse storage, you will choose from Flex through Large. Everything else is the same either way.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many containers do I need for a two-bedroom?

That is exactly what the home-size estimate above is for — tell it your bedrooms, apartment or house, and how full your place is, and it gives you a size and a Flex count. As a rough anchor, a two-bedroom apartment is in Medium territory, but your answer depends on how much you actually have.

What if I order too many — or I am not sure?

That is what Flex is for. We deliver up to four Flex containers in one delivery for a single flat rate, so order one more than you think you need. Load what you use and send the rest back unused — you only pay for the containers you use, never for ones you don’t.

Can I add another container later?

Yes. Flex is easy to add since up to four come per delivery. The larger sizes (Small, Medium, Large, Extra-Large) are delivered one at a time, so those are chosen up front — another reason an extra Flex is a handy hedge.

Does the estimate include my garage or attic?

No — the home-size estimate covers furnished living space only. If you are storing things from a garage, attic, or basement too, build an inventory and we will size all of it exactly.

What is the difference between Flex and the other sizes?

Delivery. The Small through Extra-Large come one container per delivery, so you choose the size up front. Flex comes up to four per delivery for one flat rate, which is why you can order a just-in-case extra and pay only for what you use. That flexibility in the count is what Flex means.

Where does the container go — my place or yours?

Whichever you prefer. Keep it on your driveway, or we store it indoors at our warehouse and bring it to ground level when you need access. See the On-Site or at Our Warehouse section above.

How accurate is the estimate?

It is a close starting point, not a verdict. Exact sizing is hard, so we don’t pretend the number is perfect — Flex covers the gap. For the most precise size, build a belongings inventory.

Storing before a move?

The same container can carry you through a move when you are ready. For move budgets, see the Moving Calculator.
