Estimator

Three things drive the count. Home size — a studio takes far fewer boxes than a 4-bedroom house. How long you’ve lived there — five years of accumulation packs differently than five months. Clutter level — a minimalist home with intentional belongings packs into half the boxes of a home full of collections, books, and decor. The estimator below uses all three to give you a starting count by box type plus supporting supplies. The numbers are conservative starting points — adjust to taste once you see the list.

Box & Supplies 101

Jump to a section: Standard | Specialty | Protection | Packing | Rentals | FAQ

Picking the right materials matters more than picking a lot of them. The right size box, the right wrap for fragile items, and the right rental for the heavy stuff make packing easier and protect what's in your container. Below is a quick guide to what we sell and rent, and what each is for. For a deeper guide on packing strategy, visit our packing how-to articles and videos in the Education area.

Every product we carry is specifically designed for moving and storage — pro-grade materials built to survive a real move and a stretch in storage, not retail-counter overflow that fails when you load the truck. Our supplies store covers the following major categories:

  • Standard moving boxes — the five workhorses for 70–80% of what you pack
  • Specialty boxes — built for items standard boxes don't protect well (dishes, mirrors, TVs, individual items)
  • Furniture protection — mattress bags, sofa covers, and bubble wrap for upholstery and finished surfaces
  • Packing materials — tape, paper, peanuts, and markers — the supporting cast that closes boxes and cushions what's inside
  • Rentals — hand truck, appliance dolly, and moving blankets — for items you need once and return when you're done

Standard moving boxes

The five workhorses. Most moves and storage projects are 70–80% standard boxes plus a few specialty pieces. The rule for picking among them is simple: heavy items in small boxes, light items in large boxes. A small box of books weighs around 50 pounds — one person can carry it. The same books in a large box weigh 100+ pounds, burst the bottom, and pull muscles. The table below maps each box size to the items it's built for.

Box Dimensions Best for
Sm. Box 16″ × 12″ × 12″ Heavy items: books, dishes, tools, canned goods, hardware
Med. Box 18″ × 18″ × 16″ General use: kitchenware, toys, small electronics, decor
Lg Box 18″ × 18″ × 24″ Lighter bulk: linens, lampshades, small appliances, folded clothing
XL Box 22″ × 22″ × 21″ Bulky lightweight: comforters, pillows, oversized cushions, plush toys
Wardrobe 20″ × 19″ × 45″ Hanging clothes: transfer from closet to box, no wrinkles, no folding

Mixing it backward — heavy in large, light in small — is the most common reason boxes fail and items get damaged in transit.

Specialty boxes

For items that don't fit standard sizes or need extra protection. These cost more per box but save replacement costs on damaged items.

Box Best for
Dish pack Dishes, glassware, ceramics, fragile kitchen items — extra-thick walls, designed for breakables
Mirror & picture carton Framed art, mirrors, large pictures — flat profile, telescoping construction adjusts to size
TV box Flat-screen TVs and large electronics — when the original packaging isn't available
Box n Go U Box A La Carte service: school books, linens, clothing, miscellaneous individual items

Furniture protection

Cardboard isn't the right answer for furniture. Bags, covers, and wrap protect upholstery and finished surfaces during loading, transit, and time in storage.

Item Best for
Mattress bag (Twin / Full / Queen / King) Sealing mattresses against dust, moisture, and surface scuffs — sized to fit standard mattresses
Sofa cover Protecting upholstered sofas from dust and wear during storage and transit
Bubble wrap Wrapping fragile items inside boxes — glassware, ceramics, electronics, small framed art
White Box-n-Go storage container delivered to a residential backyard patio, set up and ready for the customer to load.
A Box-n-Go container delivered to the customer’s backyard — supplies ride with the container, so packing materials arrive at the same time and the same place.

Packing materials

The supporting cast. Tape closes the boxes, paper cushions inside them, markers identify what's where.

Item Best for
Packing tape Sealing box tops and bottoms — moving-grade adhesive, not standard office tape
Packing paper / newsprint bundle Wrapping individual items and cushioning the gaps inside boxes — better than newspaper, no ink transfer
Peanut pack Filling void space in boxes around fragile items — lightweight, doesn't add to box weight
Sharpie marker Labeling boxes by room and contents — fastest unpacking when boxes are clearly marked

Rentals

For items you need once and don't want to own afterward. Returned when your move or storage project is done.

Item Best for
Hand truck Moving heavy boxes and stacked items — saves your back on stairs and long carries
Appliance dolly Moving refrigerators, washers, dryers, and other large appliances — straps secure the load, wheels handle stairs
Moving blankets Wrapping furniture during loading and storage — protects finishes from scuffs and scratches, rented by the month

What Our Customers Think

Frequently Asked Questions

Customers ask these most often. If yours isn't here, call (877) 269-6461 or use the custom quote button at the bottom of the page.

How many boxes do I need?+

It depends on your home size and how much you own. Use the estimator above for a personalized count by box type plus the supporting supplies you'll need. Storage customers typically need fewer boxes than full moves — many items go into storage unboxed.

What's the difference between standard and specialty boxes?+

Standard boxes (Small, Medium, Large, XL, Wardrobe) cover 70–80% of what most people pack. Specialty boxes are built for specific items that standard boxes don't protect well. A dish pack has extra-thick walls for breakables. A mirror and picture carton has a flat profile and adjusts to size, protecting framed art from edge damage. A TV box holds flat-screen televisions when the original packaging isn't available. Specialty boxes cost more per box, but they save replacement costs on damaged items — a single broken mirror or TV pays for many specialty boxes.

What other supplies do I need besides boxes?+

Tape, paper, and markers at minimum. Packing tape seals every box top and bottom. Packing paper (newsprint bundle) wraps individual items and cushions the gaps inside boxes. Sharpie markers label each box by room and contents so unpacking is faster. Beyond those basics, you may need bubble wrap for fragile items, mattress bags for each bed, a sofa cover, and a padlock to secure your container in storage. The estimator above includes these as line items based on what you're packing.

How long can I keep rented dollies and blankets?+

Dollies are rented by the day, for as long as your container is on your property being loaded. The dolly comes with a special padlock so you can chain it to the outside of the container between loading sessions. When you book a dolly rental, we send you an email with a short video on how to use it safely. Both delivery and pickup happen with the container — no separate trips. Moving blankets are rented by the month at $1 per blanket per month. They go out with your container and come back when the container is retrieved at the end of your project.

How do I add supplies to my container reservation?+

You add supplies during the reservation process — either online when you book through the website, or over the phone when you call (877) 269-6461. Browsing Supplies+ ahead of time and using the estimator helps you walk into the reservation knowing what you need. Then the agent or the online form captures your supply order along with the container reservation.

When do I need to order supplies relative to my delivery?+

Order supplies when you reserve your container. Supplies are delivered with the container, so as long as they're on the reservation, they ride along. If you forget something, call (877) 269-6461 before your delivery date and we can add it. Adding supplies after the container has already been delivered means a separate trip and additional cost.

Can I get boxes without storage reservation?+

Yes, but free delivery only applies when supplies ride with a container delivery. Standalone supply orders incur a separate delivery fee. Most customers find it makes more sense to order supplies as part of a container reservation — and if you don't end up needing the container, the supplies are still available for purchase with delivery handled separately.

Can I pick up supplies at your warehouse?+

Yes. Customers can pick up supplies in person at our Commerce warehouse (6017 Randolph St). Call (877) 269-6461 to confirm what you'd like and arrange the pickup time. This works well for customers who need supplies on short notice or who are already in the area.

Do you sell pre-packed kits by home size?+

Yes. We offer three pre-packed kits sized by home: the 1-2 Rooms Moving Kit, the 3-Room Moving Boxes Kit, and the 4-Room Moving Box Kit. Each kit includes a mix of small, medium, large, X-Large, and wardrobe boxes plus packing tape, bubble wrap, and a steel padlock. Kits save the work of picking individual quantities and usually cost less than buying items piece by piece. They're a good fit for customers who want a simple complete solution rather than working through the estimator line by line.
