Student Storage Near Occidental College | Oxy Student Storage

You have already pictured the day: a flight into Burbank, a rental car, and a Saturday carrying a mini-fridge out to it. The picture is missing the hill. Occidental College sits on one, and the residence halls sit near the top of it. That hill is what student storage near Occidental College takes off the weekend, and it is why parents book Oxy student storage rather than the seat.

What your student does instead is pack. The crew comes up to the room on the day, carries it down the hill, and it waits in an indoor warehouse until August. Nobody buys a ticket for it.

Occidental was founded in 1887 and has been on this hillside for more than a century. It is a small college, which is most of the appeal and all of the difficulty in May, because everyone leaves inside the same few days and down the same paths. Colorado Boulevard is a walk downhill for coffee and secondhand shops, and Pasadena is ten minutes east. However, none of that helps in the week the room has to be empty.

Why Oxy Students Need Student Storage Near Occidental College

Oxy housing closes on a date set by Residential Education, not by when you finish your last exam, and the room has to be empty by then. Storage after finals Occidental has to fit between those two dates. Students in Eagle Rock apartments usually face the opposite problem: a lease that runs out weeks before fall housing opens. Either way there is a gap, and everything you own has to sit somewhere through it.

The packing lands in the same days as the exams, and one of the two always gets the worse half of the attention. Plenty of Tigers fly home, some of them overseas, and freight both ways costs more than most of the room is worth. The gap between spring move-out and fall move-in can stretch for three or four months, and paying rent on an empty apartment costs more than storing what is in it. Closing that gap is the whole job.

The Traditional Oxy Summer Storage Challenge

Berkus, Newcomb and Erdman sit up the hill, and everything in them comes down stairs and a narrow path before it reaches a vehicle. The nearest facilities are out in Glendale or Pasadena, which is manageable with a car and nearly impossible without one. Senior comprehensive exams land in the same days as finals and the move-out date, so the week is spoken for before the packing starts.

Eagle Rock's charm doesn't extend to move-out pricing. A flight into LAX or Burbank in finals week is booked against every other family doing the same thing, Northeast LA has few hotel rooms, and on top of that come the truck rental, the fuel for trips out to Glendale, and a first month at the storage facility. The trip costs more than the storing does.

Box-n-Go: Occidental College Student Storage Made Simple

Student storage near Oxy starts at the residence hall door. There are no trucks to coordinate and no travel to arrange around it. We come directly to your dorm or apartment, take what is in the room, keep it in an indoor warehouse, and deliver everything back when you are ready for fall move-in. That is what storage near Occidental College comes to when nobody has to drive.

Self-Load Flex Container: Storage Near Occidental College for Apartments

A student storage near Occidental College unit parked in a parking lot with fence visible.

Anything with legs on it points at the container rather than at boxes. Box-n-Go delivers an 8' x 5' x 7' portable storage container directly to your apartment building, house, or the parking lot the college assigns for containers. The window on campus is short: it arrives about four days before move-out and is collected by the Monday after it. The lot changes from year to year, so check the current one with Residential Education. Container Sizes, Weight Limits and Loading gives the dimensions and the limits. The container stays at ground level throughout the loading process, so you never need a ramp, loading dock, or special equipment.

You load across several days rather than one, which is what a finals week leaves room for. Once fully loaded, Box-n-Go picks up the entire container and transports it to our secure indoor storage facility. When fall semester approaches or whenever you are ready, we deliver the container back to your new address. That is the shape of Occidental College summer storage when there are bed frames, desks and chairs going in alongside the boxes.

Roommates can share a single container to split costs, making Self-Load even more affordable for groups. For students who prefer not to do the heavy lifting themselves, third-party loading assistance is available to handle the physical work.

A La Carte Valet: Occidental College Dorm Storage

Boxes, a wrapped mattress topper on a cart and a vacuum cleaner set out beside a rental truck for student storage near Oxy.
A room's contents lined up on the walkway beside the truck, every piece labeled.

A La Carte Valet is charged by the box, so you pay for what you actually store: a dozen cartons plus a lamp, a fan and a monitor cost exactly that. It is not limited to boxes either, and a bicycle, a mini-fridge, a desk chair or a piece of furniture goes on the same collection.

Boxes and a scooter waiting by the elevators, each box tagged.

A kit reaches you in the mail before pickup day: five Box-n-Go U Boxes, packing tape and a marker. Five is where most students start rather than where they stop, so ask for more, change what the kit holds before it ships, or pack into your own boxes instead. The cardboard is heavier than the flat-packed kind and the flaps overlap the whole way across. That construction is what keeps the bottom box in a summer-long stack square. Pack your belongings at your own pace over several days, and when you are ready, schedule your pickup time. On the day, the crew comes up to the room, labels every box and every loose item against your account, carries it down, and takes it to an indoor facility.

If you run short mid-pack, Supplies+: Moving Boxes, Packing Materials and Rentals can top you up.

Lease Gap Solutions

Off campus the gap arrives with a rent bill on it. Your spring lease ends in early June and the fall apartment is not open until late August. Storing the contents costs less than paying the rent on an empty unit. Leave the furniture with us for the interval and take delivery on the day the new lease begins.

Study Abroad Storage

Shipping a room overseas and back costs more than storing it, and holding an empty room over the same months costs more again. Box-n-Go provides secure long-term storage for the duration of your program. Everything stays in the indoor warehouse until you are back, and the delivery date moves if your return date moves.

Internship and Co-op Programs

Summer internships and co-op programs often require temporary relocation. Short-term student storage Occidental College students book for a summer runs month to month. Whether you are working in San Francisco, New York, or anywhere in between, Box-n-Go stores your campus belongings until you return. This is especially valuable for students with furnished internship housing who do not need their own furniture during the summer months.

Eagle Rock Student Storage Options Near Oxy

Eagle Rock student storage usually means one of the drive-up facilities below, and a search for storage near 90041 / 90042 turns up the same list. Box-n-Go covers Eagle Rock and the 90041 area, Occidental included. Every one of these assumes you have a car:

  • Public Storage, 2370 Colorado Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90041
  • Public Storage, 3810 Eagle Rock Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90041
  • Public Storage, 4101 North Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, CA 90041
  • Public Storage, 3017 N San Fernando Rd, Los Angeles, CA 90042
  • Public Storage, 1776 Blake Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90042
  • Extra Space Storage, 2904 Casitas Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90042

Each of these rents by the unit and asks for a car and a free afternoon in the week you have least of both. That is the difference with summer storage Eagle Rock students book through Box-n-Go: the pickup and the delivery are included.

What Students and Parents Say

From students and parents who have used the service at campuses across Southern California:

★★★★★

"Needed to store the contents of my college dorm in southern California over the summer, so I ordered some a la carte boxes and packed up myself. Box-N-Go provided the boxes, scheduled the pickup, and kept my things in storage until I could come back for the next semester and have them delivered to my new dorm. The moving guys were friendly, efficient, and really good about calling beforehand so I knew when to meet them. Didn't lose anything, even the stuff that wasn't in the provided boxes. Freddy, the customer service contact I talked to over the phone, was incredibly patient and made sure I was always in the loop about the pickup/drop-off schedule. 10/10, would trust them with my stuff again."

- Shawn T.

★★★★★

"This is an awesome storage company! They are very flexible and willing to work with students. This company has been a very valuable resource to the club I am in at UCLA. Frank was extremely helpful and promptly replied to all my questions. I also love how they are open on weekends because many companies are not. I would recommend this to anyone who's looking for quick and easy storage space in the LA area, where space is limited, as we all know."

- Navdeep S., UCLA

★★★★★

"Great experience! The whole process was very convenient and Stan was super helpful. A good storage choice for international students."

- Caroline C.

★★★★★

"Makes it easy and affordable. We chose Box-n-Go for our sons move out of his college apt. They are picking up and storing his belongings for a summer and then fall semester when he is studying abroad. Makes it easy and affordable. No worries!"

- Lisa R., Los Angeles, CA - Parent

What Our Customers Think

Video transcript

With any storage facility, my concerns are, number one, safety and theft of my items, how well are they going to be cared for? Are they going to be damaged, shaken around, especially in a pod? Then also ease of access, it's not like a roll-up-door storage locker where you can just go and get in; it has to be brought out. And I thought, boy, all that moving around, it's going to be a wreck. And cost, and so on. And then, working with the people there, how easy is that going to be?

I was very pleased with the service. When I first packed up, I didn't order enough pods, and here I am in the middle of moving, on a deadline, I have to fly out across the Pacific, so it's not like I can wait around. I needed more pods. They delivered me more pods on the spot, and I packed them up.

Over the years, and I've been here quite a few years, because I moved from the mainland to Hawaii, and now from Hawaii to Panama, I've had these storage lockers for years. I went from four to three, three to two, and now two to one. Every time I've had to come here or contact them, they're Johnny-on-the-spot, so accommodating. When I call in to make my payments, I almost feel like I work here now, because I know everybody so well. They're very understanding and easy to work with.

I've had other storage lockers, this is the best experience I've ever had. That's why I've been here so long. My kids are already saying they're going to use Box-n-Go when they move. You don't think your stuff's going to be in storage that long, but it is. And with all the ins and outs of the pods, nothing has ever been damaged. Not one thing. So I'm very pleased. Very pleased.

If you're going to be out of state, your stuff's secure, it's taken care of, it's not deteriorating. We had a leather saddle in there for years, I said to my husband, it's going to be full of mold, even your shoes get moldy when they're locked up. We took it out, it's perfect. It's temperature controlled, all of it. I couldn't be happier. I would definitely recommend them. I have recommended them.

This was the first time I was renting storage. My first concerns were: where was the storage place, and was it safe? I'm putting all my valuables and keepsakes, things that are really important to me, so it was really important that they felt safe, that the company was a real company I trusted. Also the cost, how much was it going to be? I didn't want to have to worry, while I'm out traveling, about being hit with all these fees on top of it, or weird things. So those were the main concerns.

What surprised me the most, there are so many things I could say, but I guess just how easy it was. I had no idea. The whole process was very easy. When I moved everything, the box came to me, I put everything in there, it was just so simple and affordable. And then even getting into my storage: because I decided to keep traveling a little bit longer, it was super easy just to drop in, take stuff out or put some in. It was just so easy. And I felt very safe. So it totally blew my expectations of what I thought storage would be, because it's just been very pleasant.

I recommend them all the time to many people, mostly because I feel safe, I feel like my storage is in a safe place, and just because of how easy and affordable this whole process has been.

Video transcript

When I first called Box-n-Go, I spoke to Frank, and he was very thorough with the information I needed, sizes, prices and rates, the contract based on the number of months, any specials. I thought, wow, he's giving me everything; I'm not really having to ask. I liked that a lot, the information was provided up front. I told him I'd take everything, look through it, do some research, and come back to him. But I pretty much knew everything he'd said made sense, and I felt really comfortable with him. He was oriented toward good customer service, just on point. I had nothing in my mind that said I wanted to look any further.

I did some searches and Box-n-Go came up. I'd talked to some other people before, but when I got to Box-n-Go I was just like, "You know what? I've made my decision." I had no hesitation about going with anyone else.

The container came to my home, and it was exactly the size I thought it was, no surprises, no "this is too big, this is too small." I put everything in it, it got picked up, everything was on schedule, exactly as Frank had said. I was definitely pleased.

I really liked working with Frank. He was my point person the whole time I had my storage. I'd call him, he remembered me, and he made every attempt to be on point with everything. When I'd come to the storage facility to check on things, take some out, put some in, he was always there, friendly. And there were the two Stans; customer service was great, the warehouse guys were great. Everyone was friendly, no one was rude, no one was lost or disappeared. They helped me move stuff in, they helped me move stuff out. It was great, even though I was taking my stuff out of storage.

I would recommend them to everyone. So kudos to Frank, the two Stans, the warehouse guys, and Box-n-Go in general.

Student Storage Tips (Save Time, Avoid Damage)

Four things account for almost every ruined box: food, liquids, mini-fridges and open toiletries. Eagle Rock's hills make the fifty pound limit matter more here than on a flat campus, and Storage Countdown: Get Your Container Ready, Step by Step sets out the order to work in, with the list below aimed at all of it:

  • Keep every box under fifty pounds. Overloaded boxes are unsafe to lift and collapse when stacked.
  • Nothing that pours, nothing that spoils. Shampoo, detergent, half-finished drinks and anything sealed in the pantry all find a way out in a warm truck. Tape the lids, bag them, or leave them behind.
  • Defrost the mini-fridge a day before pickup. Then clean and dry it, and clean the microwave. A fridge packed damp comes back smelling of what was in it.
  • Label all sides of every box. Student name, a phone number, and where it is going. Boxes are stacked, and the top is the one face nobody can read.
  • Trash bags are dust covers, not luggage. Never let one carry weight. Roll mattress toppers rather than folding them, and bag them.
  • Pad anything breakable and mark it fragile. Wrap each piece individually. Nothing loose rattling in drawers.
  • Photograph the inside of each box before taping it. It takes a second and it is the only inventory anybody actually keeps.
  • Keep passport, medication, laptop and chargers with you. Nothing needed in the next few days goes into storage.

Work through the student storage move-out checklist before the first roll of tape comes out; it is the order that keeps those four off the truck.

Frequently Asked Questions: Storage Near Occidental College

What do college students do with their belongings over the summer?

Most Occidental students need to remove belongings when residence halls close or off-campus leases end. Box-n-Go stores items during summer break and returns them for fall move-in, so a Tiger handles it once rather than twice.

How does student storage with pickup and delivery work?

You pack, we come to the residence hall or the apartment on Campus Road, take the boxes to an indoor facility, and bring them back when you say so. Nobody has to borrow a car or find a unit in Eagle Rock.

Is student storage cheaper than shipping items home?

For many Occidental students, storage is more cost-effective than shipping items home and back, especially when furniture and multiple boxes are involved. Storage near campus eliminates double shipping costs.

What is the difference between student storage and self storage?

Traditional self storage requires transporting items yourself, which is hard work in Eagle Rock's hilly terrain without a car. Box-n-Go's student storage includes pickup and delivery aligned with Oxy's academic calendar.

What does Box-n-Go's box kit include?

The standard Box Kit includes 5 specialty student boxes (23"x14"x17"), packing tape, and a marker. Ask for extra boxes or supplies and the kit is changed before it ships. Unused supplies can be returned for credit.

How does Box-n-Go's A la Carte Valet service work?

You pack your belongings into boxes (we send a box kit to your Oxy address). On pickup day, our crew comes to your room, labels each item, and transports everything to secure storage. We deliver back when you're ready for fall.
