Why Dorm Storage Exists: The Mandatory Move-Out Reality

Nobody in a hall chooses the date. Housing publishes it, and it lands within a day or two of the last exam on most campuses and tighter than that on a few. The room has to be clear by then whether the packing is done or not, which is why dorm room storage has to work around an exam timetable rather than around a facility's opening hours.

Then there is what nine months in one room adds up to. A mini-fridge and a microwave that were bought in September, a printer, a bike, bedding, two seasons of clothes, the shelf somebody put up over the desk, and the boxes all of it arrived in. Almost nothing goes wrong in the warehouse. It goes wrong in the room, at eleven at night, at the end of a week of exams. Four things account for most of the damage every year: food, liquids, mini-fridges and open toiletries.

• Keep every box under fifty pounds. Overloaded boxes are unsafe to lift and collapse when stacked.
• Nothing that pours, nothing that spoils. Shampoo, detergent, half-finished drinks and anything sealed in the pantry all find a way out in a warm truck. Tape the lids, bag them, or leave them behind.
• Defrost the mini-fridge a day before pickup. Then clean and dry it, and clean the microwave. A fridge packed damp comes back smelling of what was in it.
• Label all sides of every box. Student name, a phone number, and where it is going. Boxes are stacked, and the top is the one face nobody can read.
• Trash bags are dust covers, not luggage. Never let one carry weight. Roll mattress toppers rather than folding them, and bag them.
• Pad anything breakable and mark it fragile. Wrap each piece individually. Nothing loose rattling in drawers.
• Photograph the inside of each box before taping it. It takes a second and it is the only inventory anybody actually keeps.
• Keep passport, medication, laptop and chargers with you. Nothing needed in the next few days goes into storage.

Do dorms allow students to leave belongings over the summer?

No. The room is cleared completely at the end of the year and nothing may be left in it, in a closet or in a lounge, because the halls are turned over for summer programs and orientation. That policy is the reason this page exists.

How do dorm students without cars move belongings into storage?
