August, and an Address Nobody Had in May
The delivery end of this is the part people plan for least and ask about most.
Housing assignments arrive across the summer, and off-campus leases in Pomona, Diamond Bar and Walnut mostly start on the first of a month rather than on a date that lines up with anybody's move-in. Almost nothing goes wrong in the warehouse. It goes wrong in the room, at eleven at night, at the end of a week of exams, when somebody doing this for the first time is deciding quickly. Four things cause most of the damage: food, liquids, mini-fridges and open toiletries. A jar of sauce, a half bottle of detergent, a fridge that was never defrosted, a shower caddy tipped into a box.
Work through the printable student move-out checklist a few days out rather than that night. It is short on purpose, and it is the thing that stops a parent flying in to supervise a job that only needed a phone call.
Student Storage Tips (Save Time, Avoid Damage)
- Keep every box under fifty pounds. Overloaded boxes are unsafe to lift and collapse when stacked.
- Nothing that pours, nothing that spoils. Shampoo, detergent, half-finished drinks and anything sealed in the pantry all find a way out in a warm truck. Tape the lids, bag them, or leave them behind.
- Defrost the mini-fridge a day before pickup. Then clean and dry it, and clean the microwave. A fridge packed damp comes back smelling of what was in it.
- Label all sides of every box. Student name, a phone number, and where it is going. Boxes are stacked, and the top is the one face nobody can read.
- Trash bags are dust covers, not luggage. Never let one carry weight. Roll mattress toppers rather than folding them, and bag them.
- Pad anything breakable and mark it fragile. Wrap each piece individually. Nothing loose rattling in drawers.
- Photograph the inside of each box before taping it. It takes a second and it is the only inventory anybody actually keeps.
- Keep passport, medication, laptop and chargers with you. Nothing needed in the next few days goes into storage.
Parents, that list doubles as a phone call. Read it down once and you will know whether the fridge and the open bottles have actually been dealt with.
