The Hidden Work Traditional Storage Requires

A facility advertises a monthly rate. It does not advertise the work that comes with it, and the work is the part that decides this.

Start with the vehicle. A truck or cargo van rented by the day, with a surcharge or a larger deposit for a driver under twenty-five, or a friend's car borrowed on the weekend that friend is moving out too. Whatever will not fit makes a second trip, or a paid ride.

Then the facility. You drive there in office hours to sign for a unit, back again on move-out day to fill it, and back a third time in August to empty it.

Then the lifting, twice over. Into the vehicle, out of the vehicle, into the unit, and the whole sequence backwards months later.

 

 

Then the timing, which never appears on a quote. The truck is due back at five, the gate closes at six, and the exams are the same week.

What It Costs When the Collection Is Not Included

Where the storage does not include the collection, the family absorbs the difference. A seat at graduation-season prices, a hotel at campus rates, a truck with a deposit and fuel on it, and the days off work to use them. None of those appear on a storage quote and together they are the larger number.

A student doing it alone pays differently. A driver under twenty-five pays more at the rental counter or leaves a bigger deposit. Fuel adds up across two round trips. And the friend with the car is owed something back, usually on the weekend they are moving out themselves.

Every box and every loose item is photographed and labeled against your account as it goes, so you know what is in storage without having to remember it. It travels to an indoor facility the same day.

Tips for Smooth Pickup Day

Almost nothing goes wrong in the warehouse. It goes wrong in the room, late, at the end of a week of exams. Four things account for most of the damage: food, liquids, mini-fridges and open toiletries.

• Keep every box under fifty pounds. Overloaded boxes are unsafe to lift and collapse when stacked.
• Nothing that pours, nothing that spoils. Shampoo, detergent, half-finished drinks and anything sealed in the pantry all find a way out in a warm truck. Tape the lids, bag them, or leave them behind.
• Defrost the mini-fridge a day before pickup. Then clean and dry it, and clean the microwave. A fridge packed damp comes back smelling of what was in it.
• Label all sides of every box. Student name, a phone number, and where it is going. Boxes are stacked, and the top is the one face nobody can read.
• Trash bags are dust covers, not luggage. Never let one carry weight. Roll mattress toppers rather than folding them, and bag them.
• Pad anything breakable and mark it fragile. Wrap each piece individually. Nothing loose rattling in drawers.
• Photograph the inside of each box before taping it. It takes a second and it is the only inventory anybody actually keeps.
• Keep passport, medication, laptop and chargers with you. Nothing needed in the next few days goes into storage.

Have it packed and ready before the crew arrives, and clear a path from the room to the door. Tell the building manager a pickup is booked, because some halls want notice before a vendor comes in.

Parents, that list is also a phone call. Read it down once with your student and you will know whether the fridge was really defrosted and the open bottles really went in the trash.
