Apartments around Lake Avenue and South Pasadena come unfurnished, so a desk, a chair, a bed frame and a set of shelves fill a container without an argument. A Campus of a Thousand, in a City That Is Not
Caltech has been in Pasadena since 1891 and has stayed deliberately small: about a thousand undergraduates, which is smaller than a lot of high schools. That size is why the whole campus empties in the same three days, and why a crew can work one house at a time.

Staying Through the Summer, or Leaving for Longer

How to Pack Before Pickup Day

It exists because everyone packs during finals, and nobody makes a good decision about food, liquids, a mini-fridge or open toiletries at midnight. - Keep every box under fifty pounds. Overloaded boxes are unsafe to lift and collapse when stacked.
- Nothing that pours, nothing that spoils. Shampoo, detergent, half-finished drinks and anything sealed in the pantry all find a way out in a warm truck. Tape the lids, bag them, or leave them behind.
- Defrost the mini-fridge a day before pickup. Then clean and dry it, and clean the microwave. A fridge packed damp comes back smelling of what was in it.
- Label all sides of every box. Student name, a phone number, and where it is going. Boxes are stacked, and the top is the one face nobody can read.
- Trash bags are dust covers, not luggage. Never let one carry weight. Roll mattress toppers rather than folding them, and bag them.
- Pad anything breakable and mark it fragile. Wrap each piece individually. Nothing loose rattling in drawers.
- Photograph the inside of each box before taping it. It takes a second and it is the only inventory anybody actually keeps.
- Keep passport, medication, laptop and chargers with you. Nothing needed in the next few days goes into storage.
Parents, the same list works as a phone call. Run down it once and you will know whether the fridge and the open bottles have actually been dealt with.

No problem. There is no maximum term, so belongings can stay as long as you need them to. Some students leave everything with us for a full year, through a term abroad or a gap between leases.
