If You Live in a House: A La Carte, by the Box
In Avery or Ricketts you do not need a container sitting in a lot. A La Carte Valet stores your belongings by the box instead. We mail a box kit before pickup day with five U Boxes, tape and a marker, and we send more if you ask for them. The boxes are built for this rather than bought at a hardware store: thicker cardboard than a moving box, and flaps that overlap the whole way across, because a student box gets stacked and stored rather than carried across a room. Use your own boxes if you would rather. You pack whenever the exam schedule lets you.
On the day, the crew comes up to your room. They label every box and every loose item, register each one against your account, carry it all down, and take it to an indoor facility. In the fall the crew brings it back up to your room, or to whatever address you give us if you have moved. A Campus of a Thousand, in a City That Is Not
That week lands on everybody here at once, and the campus itself is the reason. Caltech has been in Pasadena since 1891 and has stayed deliberately small, with an undergraduate body smaller than a lot of high schools. Staying Through the Summer, or Leaving for Longer
Not everyone is gone for three months. A term abroad or a year out puts a room into storage for longer than a break, and so does a summer that never leaves Pasadena. How to Pack Before Pickup Day
Almost everything that goes wrong in storage goes wrong while you are packing, not while it is stored. Moving Countdown: Plan Your Move sets the weeks out so the packing does not collide with the exams. Take the printable student move-out checklist a few days ahead of the day itself, not the night before. It exists because everyone packs during finals, and nobody makes a good decision about food, liquids, a mini-fridge or open toiletries at midnight. Those four ruin more boxes between them than everything else put together.
- Keep every box under fifty pounds. Overloaded boxes are unsafe to lift and collapse when stacked.
- Nothing that pours, nothing that spoils. Shampoo, detergent, half-finished drinks and anything sealed in the pantry all find a way out in a warm truck. Tape the lids, bag them, or leave them behind.
- Defrost the mini-fridge a day before pickup. Then clean and dry it, and clean the microwave. A fridge packed damp comes back smelling of what was in it.
- Label all sides of every box. Student name, a phone number, and where it is going. Boxes are stacked, and the top is the one face nobody can read.
- Trash bags are dust covers, not luggage. Never let one carry weight. Roll mattress toppers rather than folding them, and bag them.
- Pad anything breakable and mark it fragile. Wrap each piece individually. Nothing loose rattling in drawers.
- Photograph the inside of each box before taping it. It takes a second and it is the only inventory anybody actually keeps.
- Keep passport, medication, laptop and chargers with you. Nothing needed in the next few days goes into storage.
Parents, the same list works as a phone call. Run down it once and you will know whether the fridge and the open bottles have actually been dealt with.

A typical dorm room requires 5-10 medium boxes plus space for furniture and odd-shaped items. Order slightly more than you think you need; unused boxes can often be returned. Tell us your room type on the call and we will say how many to send.
What if I want to store my items longer than the summer?
No problem. There is no maximum term, so belongings can stay as long as you need them to. Some students leave everything with us for a full year, through a term abroad or a gap between leases.
What if my student needs something from storage during the summer?
Give us a few days of notice and you can get to your things. Come to the facility in business hours, or ask us to pull one item and have it waiting. A handling fee may apply.
