You can check two bags. You cannot check a portfolio case, a flat file of drawings, a light kit, a keyboard, a tool roll, or the four boxes of material you spent a year collecting and cannot easily replace. Everyone else on your floor is in the same position with a different set of objects. Why a CalArts Room Holds More Than a Dorm Room
None of that list is unusual here, and the reason goes back to how the place was built. Walt and Roy Disney founded the California Institute of the Arts in 1961 out of the merger of the Chouinard Art Institute and the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music, and the Institute moved to its Valencia campus in 1971. Six schools share that campus: Art, Critical Studies, Dance, Film and Video, Music, and Theater. That is why California Institute of the Arts student storage is not a matter of a few boxes of clothes. A sound designer here still ends up carrying a flat for somebody else's thesis show, and by May a single room holds prints, maquettes, instruments, costume racks and part of a set.
The valley itself is worth the drive up. Vasquez Rocks Natural Area is twenty minutes away and you have seen its tilted sandstone in a hundred films without knowing where it was. Six Flags Magic Mountain is close enough to fill a Tuesday rather than a whole trip. None of that changes what happens when the term ends. Housing closes Chouinard Hall and Ahmanson Hall on a published date. Leases in the surrounding complexes turn over at the end of the month. The show comes down on a Friday, the room has to be clear by Sunday, and the flight home leaves Monday morning.
What the Usual Route Asks of You
The usual route is a self storage unit off Bouquet Canyon or Kelly Johnson, and it does work. Look at what it asks first. You need a vehicle you probably do not have, or a rented truck you have never driven. You need a friend with a free Saturday in the one weekend everybody is striking a show. Going Home a Long Way, or Not Going Home
For a student flying home rather than driving, the summer is a suitcase allowance rather than a car trunk. CalArts international student storage is the difference between keeping the things a practice is built around and selling them on a campus message board in May.

How to Pack a Studio Practice
Whichever service you book, the packing is the part you control. Work survives storage. What it does not always survive is the hour it was packed in. Getting Started: How to Prep for Your Moving or Storage covers the general case. The list below is the standard one, and the last two items are the part that matters at an art school.
- Keep every box under fifty pounds. Overloaded boxes are unsafe to lift and collapse when stacked.
- Nothing that pours, nothing that spoils. Shampoo, detergent, half-finished drinks and anything sealed in the pantry all find a way out in a warm truck. Tape the lids, bag them, or leave them behind.
- Defrost the mini-fridge a day before pickup. Then clean and dry it, and clean the microwave. A fridge packed damp comes back smelling of what was in it.
- Label all sides of every box. Student name, a phone number, and where it is going. Boxes are stacked, and the top is the one face nobody can read.
- Trash bags are dust covers, not luggage. Never let one carry weight. Roll mattress toppers rather than folding them, and bag them.
- Pad anything breakable and mark it fragile. Wrap each piece individually. Nothing loose rattling in drawers.
- Photograph the inside of each box before taping it. It takes a second and it is the only inventory anybody actually keeps.
- Keep passport, medication, laptop and chargers with you. Nothing needed in the next few days goes into storage.
- Roll drawings, do not fold them. Rigid tubes for works on paper, corner protectors on boards and stretched canvas, foam around anything cast or carved, and FRAGILE marked on more than one face.
- Instruments and gear travel in their cases. Loosen string tension, take the reed or mouthpiece out, and pack cables and pedals in a box of their own rather than loose in a bag. Photograph serial numbers before anything is taped shut.
Print the student move-out checklist and work through it while there is still daylight and a hardware store open. It exists because nobody makes a sound decision about food, liquids, a mini-fridge or open toiletries at two in the morning during finals. Those four do more damage to boxes than everything else combined.
Parents, none of this needs a plane ticket: you book, schedule the pickup and set the fall redelivery by phone, agree the pickup date before finals week, and confirm who opens the door if your student is in a critique. It doubles as a way to check the inks and the solvents, which are the two things on this campus that a general list never asks about. Have the move-out checklist in front of you on that call.
Questions Asked Before a Studio Is Packed
These come up every May. CalArts move out storage is one pickup at the end of the term and one delivery in the fall.
What happens if I don't move out by the deadline?
Housing decides that, and the answer is in your housing agreement rather than here. Book the pickup for before the room has to be clear, and tell us if the show or the date moves.
Is it better to store items near campus or take them home?
Near campus, for almost everyone here. Taking a studio home means shipping a portfolio case and a light kit twice, which costs more than storing them, and a term of material rarely survives the round trip. Home only wins if you drive and the drive is short.
Can I use my own boxes?
Yes, as long as they are sturdy and undamaged. A tired box will not survive four months at the bottom of a stack. Our own U Boxes are heavier board with flaps that overlap the whole way across, and the kit is yours to change before it ships.
Can you deliver to a different address than pickup?
Yes. Students move from a hall to an apartment, or between halls, all the time. We deliver wherever you need your belongings inside our service area.
What is a "bulk" pickup/drop off?
During your school's move-out/move-in days, Box-n-Go picks up and delivers for many students at once. That is why those dates cost less than a pickup arranged for another day. Pickups on other dates carry an additional fee, and we will give you the figure when you book.
What does Box-n-Go's box kit include?
The standard Box Kit includes 5 specialty student boxes (23 by 14 by 17 inches), packing tape, and a marker. You can customize the kit with additional boxes or supplies. Unused supplies can be returned for credit.
Do I have to be present during pickup or delivery?
Typically, students or an authorized representative should be present. Scheduling flexibility is available to accommodate finals, travel, and move-out timing. If you cannot be there, name a roommate or a friend to open the door.
