Huntington is doubles and triples off a common hallway, so Huntington Hall storage is usually two or three students booking together. Catalina puts private bathrooms and walk-in closets on single-gender floors. That is why a Catalina room tends to hold more by April. Balboa and Newport share one community in a suite layout where four rooms open onto a living area. The neighborhood is unusually good for a campus this size. The OC Fair and Event Center is directly across Fair Drive at number 88 and runs events, a working farm and a speedway all year rather than only in July. Fairview Park is next door with miles of trails and a gateway onto the Santa Ana River Trail. Talbert Regional Park runs south toward the water, and Huntington State Beach sits at the end of the same road west.
None of it changes what happens once the semester closes. The halls publish a closing date and hold to it. A room turns into a stack in the hallway, and the stack has to be somewhere before the weekend. That is the week the halls and the apartments around them book at once. Student Storage Tips (Save Time, Avoid Damage)
Trouble in storage nearly always starts at the packing table, not in the warehouse. Go through the printable student move-out checklist several days ahead, not on the final night. It exists because the packing all happens during finals, and nobody decides well about a mini-fridge at one in the morning. Food, liquids, a mini-fridge and open toiletries: those are the four.
- Keep every box under fifty pounds. Overloaded boxes are unsafe to lift and collapse when stacked.
- Nothing that pours, nothing that spoils. Shampoo, detergent, half-finished drinks and anything sealed in the pantry all find a way out in a warm truck. Tape the lids, bag them, or leave them behind.
- Defrost the mini-fridge a day before pickup. Then clean and dry it, and clean the microwave. A fridge packed damp comes back smelling of what was in it.
- Label all sides of every box. Student name, a phone number, and where it is going. Boxes are stacked, and the top is the one face nobody can read.
- Trash bags are dust covers, not luggage. Never let one carry weight. Roll mattress toppers rather than folding them, and bag them.
- Pad anything breakable and mark it fragile. Wrap each piece individually. Nothing loose rattling in drawers.
- Photograph the inside of each box before taping it. It takes a second and it is the only inventory anybody actually keeps.
- Keep passport, medication, laptop and chargers with you. Nothing needed in the next few days goes into storage.
- Agree who owns what in a triple before anybody packs. Three people sharing one room produce a shared pile, and the argument is easier in April than in August.
- Empty the suite living area first. In Balboa and Newport the shared furniture and the shared fridge are the things everyone assumes somebody else is handling.
