A Campus Built Around People Who Leave Every Afternoon
The reason the year ends on a lease date rather than a housing date goes back to how the place was built. Orange Coast College opened in 1947 and taught its first classes in 1948 on a former army air base. The campus on Fairview Road still reads that way: wide, flat and built for a college where most people arrive by car and go home again. It is a two-year college in the Coast Community College District, and it has spent seventy-odd years being the place people transfer out of on purpose.
Off campus there is more within a mile than most students use. The OC Fair and Event Center is across Fair Drive and runs concerts, the speedway and a working farm all year, not only in July. TeWinkle Park sits across Arlington Drive with a lake and twelve tennis courts. Talbert Regional Park follows the Santa Ana River down toward the coast, and Huntington State Beach is a fifteen-minute drive.
None of it changes the last week of May. The semester ends, the agreement ends, the lease ends, and a room becomes a pile that has to be somewhere by the weekend.

Storing for Longer Than a Summer
Plenty of people here are not gone for three months. A transfer to a four-year school in the fall, a semester abroad, a deployment, a gap between an associate degree and whatever comes next: all of them put a room into storage for longer than a break. It exists because packing lands in finals week, and a mini-fridge at midnight never gets a sound decision. The high-risk items are the same every year: food, liquids, mini-fridges and open toiletries.
- Keep every box under fifty pounds. Overloaded boxes are unsafe to lift and collapse when stacked.
- Nothing that pours, nothing that spoils. Shampoo, detergent, half-finished drinks and anything sealed in the pantry all find a way out in a warm truck. Tape the lids, bag them, or leave them behind.
- Defrost the mini-fridge a day before pickup. Then clean and dry it, and clean the microwave. A fridge packed damp comes back smelling of what was in it.
- Label all sides of every box. Student name, a phone number, and where it is going. Boxes are stacked, and the top is the one face nobody can read.
- Trash bags are dust covers, not luggage. Never let one carry weight. Roll mattress toppers rather than folding them, and bag them.
- Pad anything breakable and mark it fragile. Wrap each piece individually. Nothing loose rattling in drawers.
- Photograph the inside of each box before taping it. It takes a second and it is the only inventory anybody actually keeps.
- Keep passport, medication, laptop and chargers with you. Nothing needed in the next few days goes into storage.
- Rinse the salt off anything that has been in the water. Boards, wetsuits and fins dry fully before they go in a box, or everything around them comes back smelling of the harbor.
- Empty the car before you empty the apartment. Half of what a commuter owns is already in the trunk, and it is the half nobody remembers to pack.
